The exhibition explores how light, food, and microbes can support the body during this time, translating scientific insights into experimental interventions and offering inspiration during the darkest months of the year. All living organisms, from fungi and bacteria to humans, live by internal biological clocks shaped directly or indirectly by light. For humans, this inner rhythm guides key processes in the body. Sleep and wakefulness are regulated by melatonin, which responds to daylight through signals from the eyes. Our mood is supported by serotonin, most of which is produced in the gut with help from our microbiota. And vitamin D, made in the skin or absorbed through foods exposed to UVB light, plays an essential role in supporting both mood and the body’s circadian rhythm. When sunlight decreases during winter, these systems become disrupted: circadian rhythms shift, vitamin D levels drop, and symptoms of Seasonal Affective Disorder, or the so-called “winter depression”, can be triggered.WINTER BLUES, reflects on these hidden dialogues, and explores how light, food, and microbes can support the body during seasonal darkness, translating scientific insights into experimental interventions. The result is a laboratory of coping strategies, from light therapy used to mimic daylight, to fermentation supporting gut and mind, to fungi charged with vitamin D. yeast We humans live in interdependence with the organisms that inhabit our bodies. What we eat directly impacts the well-being of the microbes that live in our body, and in turn, our own well-being. If they are happy, we are happy! How then, can we design nutrition from the perspective of a community rather than for an individual species? Fungi, bacteria, and viruses outnumber our human cells. The largest population of microorganisms within the body lives in our gut and shapes not only physical health but also mental well-being. In fact, 95% of the body's serotonin —the “happiness chemical”— is made in the digestive tract, indicating that feeding the microbes is, in essence, feeding our happiness. One way to nourish these communities of microorganisms is through fermented foods. While fermentation practices are often considered from the perspective of food preservation, they are also a way to transform food into new forms of energy. Some fermented foods, such as kombucha, generate a symbiotic culture that consists of lactic acid bacteria (LAB), acetic acid bacteria (AAB), and yeast. ceremonial handmade objects inspired by the symbolic murder of Virginia Woolf's phantom in 'Professions for Women'.&nbsp; In this text, the author metaphorically kills her phantom to liberate herself and create freely as a woman. For this mischievous Victorian dinner party in disrepair i have created two objects:&nbsp;TORCH and GOBLETs. TORCH - a series of ritualistic sculptures that marked the beginning and end of the FINE DYING&nbsp;ceremony.&nbsp; A ceremony that celebrates the necessary death of female prejudice, and invites us to re-define the terms of our individual and collective experience. Pointing to Virginia Woolf´s story, shells trap and kill invaders that enter their interior by creating a pearl - “Had I not killed her, she would have killed me” (Woolf). Materials: Transparent... http://mariapitaguerreiro.com/MOTHER Wed, 08 Jan 2025 10:24:06 +0000 mariapitaguerreiro 455405 MOTHER2024 UNMUTE Residency by Värmeverket MOTHER&nbsp;- is a project that highlights the symbiotic relationship between humans and microorganisms.&nbsp;What started as self-initiated research—driven by my fascination with living organisms and my personal journey with gut disorders—evolved into a collaborative exhibition with Alexandra Moreno &amp; Marta Veiga during a residency at Värmeverket. We explored the different aspects of our connection to microbes—those living on, around, and inside us in a site-specific immersive exhibition designed for the Underverket Festival. Visitors scanned a QR code to hear “Mother” guide them through the artworks. “Mother” first invited them to participate in an ingestion ritual designed by Moa Marklund, marking the beginning of a journey into the gut. These microbes are crucial for digestion and also influence our behavior and mood. I explored fermentation and its byproducts, creating handmade glass vessels to grow the “mothers” of fermented tea—smiley, gelatinous films of living colonies of yeast, lactic, and acetic acid bacteria. These are the same types of bacteria that live in our gut, making it evident the connection between fermented foods and a happy gut. What we eat directly impacts the well-being of these microbes, and in turn, our own well-being. Since 95% of our serotonin (the “happiness chemical”) is produced in the gut, feeding our microbes is essentially feeding our happiness! I also created a video that explored the visual similarities between fermented tea byproducts and the human gut. My work counted on the invaluable collaboration of Robert Jan Brummer, a leading researcher at the Nutrition-Gut-Brain Interactions Research Centre (NGBI), and Tiffany Abitbol, a specialist in Fungi are the great decomposers, feeding on death and converting it into new life. These objects act as vessels of ceremony, celebrating biological processes such as decay and growth.
