SMILEY

2024

A set of handblown glass bowls with a smiley face imprint, designed to bring playfulness to home fermentation.

Materials: Transparent glass
Dimensions: approx 27 ⌀ cm  (different heights)

The bowls serve as vessels for growing kombucha, where the fermentation culture — SCOBY — forms into a gelatinous smiley shape. The SCOBY, a living culture of bacteria and yeast, is often perceived as repulsive due to its slimy texture. This reaction can make fermentation feel inaccessible, despite its simplicity and health benefits. While it may appear unappealing, the SCOBY plays a crucial role in transforming basic ingredients into nutrient-rich living food.

The project explores the tension between fascination and disgust, using design to shift perception and encourage engagement with biological processes.
